There comes a morning in April when the sun finally pours through the office windows. The light is beautiful, and it is also merciless: it reveals everything six months of winter had been kind enough to hide.
Office spring cleaning targets what regular cleaning rarely reaches: floors and carpets marked by winter, windows, high areas, break room appliances and storage spaces. Schedule it outside working hours, once the snow and salt are gone.
1Entrances and floors
- Deep-clean or replace entrance mats
- Remove salt built up in corners and along walls
- Assess whether floors need stripping and polishing
- Clean carpets in the busiest areas
2Glass and high places
- Wash windows, partitions and glass doors
- Dust light fixtures, vents and the tops of cabinets
- Wipe the window sills
- Note any bulbs that need replacing
3Break room and washrooms
- Clean inside the fridge and microwave
- Say goodbye to the containers forgotten since Christmas
- Descale taps and clean the grout
- Check soap and paper dispensers
4Workstations and storage
- Ask staff to clear their desks
- Clean keyboards, phones and screens following the manufacturer's instructions
- Sort through storage and archives
- Freshen up chairs and upholstered furniture
5Choosing the right moment
The whole exercise loses its point if one last snowfall brings salt back onto freshly washed floors. Wait until the season is truly over, then book an evening or a weekend. A simple reminder to staff the day before makes the work much easier.
